KIDS AND SPEAKING

Hello everyone!

Today I´m going to talk about kids and speaking. First of all I want you to ask a question:

If you don´t need to comunicate with others... would you learned how to speak? I don´t think so.

So, now we can notice that everyone of us, needs a reason to speak, and if you are a young children you can´t think this on your own, so they need someone who encourage language and speaking.

As a teacher, in class, we all need to help them to improve their language, so, for that, we need to think on activities in wich they have to talk, questions to encourage the speaking, and not just yes or no answering questions, and of course, we need to motivate them to answer and to speak in class.

another good ay to improve the speaking in class is to do a whole class speaking activity, or just to repeat or sing a song all together. They need to feel confidence to start talking, and if everyone is looking just for one person and waiting for this person to talk, children can feel uncomfortable. We need to adapt our activities, and we need to know and understend our learners. Maybe, if you know that one of the children are shiny, maybe you can ask for him or her if he os she wants to add something to the conversation. We have to addapt to thei learning development.

Other activity that we can do, is to divide the class in small groups, or maybe in pairs. This is a good way to feel selfconfidence and to try to comunicate to the others, and to improve the speaking in class.

We have to make a confidence and secure environment, an we have to adapt our rythm to our learners learning deveolpment. the same lesson can be very different depending on the class, so you have to know when, how and wich materials, activities or schedule are you going to use.

The Pygmalion Effect and the Power of Positive Expectations

This is a very interesting video for me, becouse I am aboslutely agree with all the things that they said on it.

In this video they are talking about how can the positive expectations, and in fact the negative expectations affect children. Kids actually gets smarter when their expected to get smarter by their teachers and how teachers treat their children in class, deppending on their expectations, and this is why children transform their attitude and marks by their teachers bad expectation.

On the other hand, we know that possitive expectation change the perception of comething, like we said before, and this is the Pygmalion effect.

So now, that we know that teacher expectations will affect what happens, as teachers, we have to notice it, work on it, and we have to give feedback to our students, and not depending on their school marks.

IDEAS FOR USING FLASHCARDS

In this video Carol Read gave us some interesting tips to introduce and use flashcards with children in class.
There are a lot of activities that we can do with children using flashcards.
First of all, we have to pay atention on how are we going to introduce it to children. We can do it like a flash, and show it very fast, so this is a very interesnting way to get their atention. We can show it very slowly, for doing this we have to cover the flashcard and then reveal it very slowly, so they are going to recognise it as soon as they can.

But this is just the way you introduce flashcards, but there are a lot of activities that you can do in class using flashcards. Yo can play games, like:

"What´s missing"  to play this game you have to show all the flashcards, and then you have to ask their to close their eyes, and you have to remove one flashcard, and they have to ghess wich flaschard is misshing.

"Magic eyes" in this game you are helping to train children memory, becouse yo have to repeat all the flashcard in a rythmic way, and you are going to remove one by one, and all of us have to repeat the secuence.

But of course you can do a lot of activities with flashcard depending on what do you want to work. If you want to practive vocabulary, you can put all the flashcards in the blackboard, and then you can remove it and ask their to write or sayng the most things they can remember.

You can play action games, so you can divide into 3 to 5 groups of children, and asigne one flashcard to each group, then you can give intructions and ask for doing something like "Touch your nose tigers"

To sum up, and as you can see, there are plety of poibilities to work with children using flashcards.
We need  to be sure about what are we going to work, and how are we going to do it, so the key is to plann our lesson, and think about what children are interested in, and use it.

The secret of working with children

First of all I would like to highlight that thanks to this video, I have learned other ways of looking at education, and I can´t wait to be in contact with children and experiment at first person this way to see education.

The key of this video is the "SECRET" of education, and where the secret lies.

On first time, we have to think about critical activities, how to plan our lessons, to think about learning styles, and how can the same learning goes different with different classes.

At this video, we were talking about activities to do in class with different materials, becouse we have to plann our lessons and think what are the activities that we are going to do.

We can use flashcards,  but we have to think about how are we going to use it, and to present it to the class, and introduce it to children. We can show it slowly, or use it in a song, or we can look something and draw it, or just ask to their what is something and they have to answer it with their body, but we are all agree in something. Children need movements, they need to move and not to be stative.

We have to find the context, and then we have to connect language and the context, becouse culture are like parts of an onion and we, as teachers, has to adapt learning rythms. We have to be enthusiastic, to provided they visual support, to engaged children to participate, becouse they need to understand hat it is happening, they need reasons and they need to use real life objects to learn and to connect the context with the real life. That is the way to learn something, and... the most important thing, is that children needs fun.

On the other hand, we can do thing to accelerated learning cycle. We have to find the way to connect the activities, and the context.

We have to use language, and give oportunities to the children, the key is that when you understand something you can explain it to the others, and this is how we are going to notice that they are learning and understanding something, when we give they the oportunity to explain it to the others. And of course, this is nothing without review. this is the momento when they consolidate their learning. We have to think about what did we learned, and how did we learned it, becouse learning without reviewing hasn´t have sense.

To sum up, as I said at the beginning of this post... We need to know what is the SECRET of education. Okey... let me show you something.

S: Sensory acuity. To do something with all the senses that we have. We have to use the body lenguage, body contact, eye contact, voice, gesture... we have to take care about everything when we are in class and we want to work with children in the correct way.

E: Emotions. the emotional inteligence. We have to know that there are three possitions. First possition, is the self possition, and if you are in this possition, you are going to take things as if they are personal, and you can´t resolve conflicts. Then, there are the second possition, and this is the other possition, here we can have empathy and anticipate problems. And at the end, but this is the most important possition for us, the third possition, this is the observer possition. We have to know when do we have to be in each position.

C: Communication. We have to use body lenguage, and we have to notice children what is good about what they did, not just to say "very good", we have to explain what is good, and we have to "catch them being good", this is so important, becouse then they are going to know that they can do that thing in the good way.

R: Relationships. They have to know that weare not friends, but the have to notice that you apreciates them. They need to do something all together, like sing a song and report each others, or to use rutines or rituals before the beginning of the class.

E: Evaluation. We have to think about what is the correct way to evaluate something.

T: Talk, but this is a particular king of talk, this is tactical talk, and this consists in offering choice to children. They have to choose an option and they have to ne responsible of what they choose. For this, to resolve the conflict, we have to be in the their person position.

And to sum up, we are going tovtry to  anwer a question...  WHERE THE SECRET OF WORK WITH CHILDREN LIES?

It lies on you. You are the secret, and you have to be self-confidence, and you have to enjoy your ork, and to know that you are doing it good.

HOW CAN I HELP PUPILS TO UNDERSTAND A STORY?

As far as I know, and based on my experience, I can say that everyone loves to listen stories.
stories has the power of engaged and let then feel that they are also participating in the procces of the story.
If story telling is made into an interesting expercience and fun filled activity here the listeners also participate in telling, guessing, manipulating, it could be a joyous learning experience.
For us, as teachers we have to do everything as we can, to help pupils to understand the story, but not translating it.
first of all, to tell a story we have to be close and we need to be close to story telling techniques, and we need to love the story and enjoy it.
If you do this, the storytelling ill be amazing.
Other skill is to encourage children to participate, asking things duting you are telling the story, and here you can see if they are following and understanding the story or not.
Of course, you have to do mime and sounds, and maybe you can show the pictures that the book has, or you can use flashcards, or you can take some pictures with you from internet, and show it during the story.
This probably helps children to understand the story, and maybe you can have an after and before activity, and you can ask children what are they expecting about that book, and at this momento, you are indtroducing children to the story.

To sum up, the most important thing, as my point of view, is to choose a story that you enjoy, to know the story, to practice to telling story in front of someone, and to try to feel confortable, and try to do as good as you can.

children are going to enjoy this time with you, even if you aren´t a good storyteller, so have fun, and enjoy this moment.

WHAT ABOUT?

FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS
There is five little monkeys and it a funny way to work in a preeschool class, the numbers and animals.

RAINBOW FISH:
It´s a very funny video. We can watch it ith children and talk about how important is to have partners and people who help yo to do some activities. We can emphasize and talk about the important of frienship.

THE LION AND THE MOUSE:
There is the fable about this two animals.
we can work about ho important is to help the others, and not to refuse someones help or to think that we are never going to need help.
"even a mouse can help a lion"

THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE:
There is a fable. As teachers we can talk about the imprtance of constance. We have to work constantly, and to think about ho important is the constant effort. You are going to be whoever you want, only if yo have a continious work.
